last night

Last night seems so far away.

Time has gone by the wayside.

The morning has arrived. Now,

what’s left are memories from

what was done. Time to look

ahead as I build up the courage

to get out of bed. Dreams, sleep,

and time separate last night

from this morning. Now, birds

are singing. Most are soaring.

We never know when last night

will be our last night. Wrong

or right, the transition to day

brings us closer to the light.

Life isn’t promised or guaranteed.

Tonight could be my last night.

Odds are it won’t be. But, life

is unpredictable as entering

the void is inevitable. Still,

I do what I can to love: to fill

my soul with love and passion.

Don’t forget about last night,

but enjoy the morning. Enjoy

the past, the future, the present

before asking where the time went.

Stay Strong

During these times, we must stay
strong. Those who come along
must adjust – knock off the rust.
When the foundation is weak,
humanity’s future seems bleak.
The stronger we are right now
will, somehow, help us breathe
in times of need. Small seeds
need strong sources of water,
sunlight, and soil. To grow up
means to show up when things
blow up. In this life, we must
nurture the young and teach
them right from wrong. Long
story short: when life pushes,
we have to push back and be
strong before any surrender.
Stay strong and live your life
just how all days turn to night.

Father Time

Don’t hit fast-forward.
Don’t press rewind.
Press play and watch
memories from the past
come to life. Take it
slow and pay attention
to the days that pass by
most of our closed eyes.
Look too far and miss
today. Don’t look at all
as our doubts grow tall.
Don’t rush. In our lives,
things may come and go,
yet we will come to learn
there is more to know.
Father time has his hands
full with grains of sand
flowing to his sandals.
Only he knows when
his palms are empty.
Only we can know that
this life is a blessing.

Washing Away

Life, before my eyes,
has been washing away.
The vast ocean takes
what I took for granted.
The vast ocean makes
me stay in my place.
On the edge of the beach,
I feel water beneath me.
I look ahead and I see
life, before my eyes,
washing away. Nothing is
here to stay. Life comes.
It goes before the water
hits my toes – all the same.
Many have washed away
after dancing in the rain.
After all, I can’t complain;
We all endure some pain
inside the same hurricane.

20/20 Vision

I see clearly. My 20/20
is on point. No, really,
through the darkness,
I can see beams of light.
We’ve been put through
a test. It is tough as we
don’t have any answers.
Still, my vision is sharp.
I am aware. I do care,
just not enough to share.
Clearly, I see a mess
that 2020 has left. I see
us cleaning this up
and having fun in 2021.
