Life is not black and white.
There is much to be seen.
There are colors in between.
Nothing is that simple.
There are shapes, shades,
and colors surrounding us.
There are colors in you
and me. There are blue
skies, green eyes, gray
gooses, black nights,
white lies, yellow sunflowers,
clear tears, red lobsters,
green monsters, red sunburns,
gray skies, silver bullets,
brown dirt, hot pink shirts,
brown bears, purple carpets,
Ivory stairs, golden years.
There is so much color
that gets painted onto
this blank canvas of life.
You can see so much more
if you just open your eyes.

Carried Away
Today, I got carried away.
Instead of work, I play.
Sometimes I forget to live
without stress. The older
I get, the shorter the days.
Today, I got carried away
from what I was doing.
Half the time, I don’t know
which direction to go.
The other half of the time,
I don’t know if I should
go outside or stay in
and hide. These long legs
carry me away. One point
to the next. Feeling blessed
in my chest, I hold my head
high. I look to the sky. I see
wings carry birds away.
I feel the wind chill my skin.
I can count on my days
getting carried away.
My mind might stray, yet
my body will stay. Blue
skies littered with birds
help me find the words
needed to carry me away.
I look ahead and know that
one day, blues fade to black.
The Dumb Idiom Bum
I think he caught his second wind.
He keeps his cards close to his chest.
His back to the wall, he does his best
to weather the storm. Most thought
of him as a dumb idiom bum. Yet,
he was richer than the rest. He lives
in a house of business cards. Bet
he is a cat among the pigeons.
He buries every hatchet and burns
every bridge. He goes out on a limb
in cold blood. When life seems dim,
he looks on the bright side. Life is no
picnic, but it doesn’t get out of hand.
He writes his poems in a black book
in front of black cats with black caps.
He may give you the cold shoulder
or a skeleton from his closet. He is
the only human in a room full
of elephants wearing tight pants.
He raises the bar outside the lines.
He stays in the loop: has the scoop.
He will not drain his swamp.
No pain. No gain. And, he is here
to stay. The dumb idiom bum
chooses to live against the grain
because he is a free-spirit up to
no good for God knows how long.
Kingdom of Light
It’s up the stairs and to the right.
Welcome to the Kingdom of Light.
We have been waiting for you.
We left the door open hoping
you would explore the other side.
We are filled with joy to enjoy
what life is left. The Kingdom
of Light accepts all walks of life.
Darkness fleets in fear of being
exposed by beams of white found
inside the Kingdom of Light.
You and I will work as a team
to resurrect a dying dream.
Let me be the first one to say
that we can turn black to grey,
grey to green, green to white,
and white to bright lights.
Welcome to the Kingdom of Light:
a happy place far out of sight.
A Rainbow’s End
I have traveled many miles
to see the end of the rainbow.
I have seen time slip before
my very eyes. To my surprise,
Mother Nature never lied.
I searched far and wide,
outside and inside, to find
a better life at the end
of the rainbow. I know that
I traveled to the end and back.
I must appreciate the rainbow
before it decides to turn black.
