last night

Last night seems so far away.

Time has gone by the wayside.

The morning has arrived. Now,

what’s left are memories from

what was done. Time to look

ahead as I build up the courage

to get out of bed. Dreams, sleep,

and time separate last night

from this morning. Now, birds

are singing. Most are soaring.

We never know when last night

will be our last night. Wrong

or right, the transition to day

brings us closer to the light.

Life isn’t promised or guaranteed.

Tonight could be my last night.

Odds are it won’t be. But, life

is unpredictable as entering

the void is inevitable. Still,

I do what I can to love: to fill

my soul with love and passion.

Don’t forget about last night,

but enjoy the morning. Enjoy

the past, the future, the present

before asking where the time went.

Trails

Without fail, we blaze trails
that will help others with
their paths. Like those
before us, we’re born into
life without foresight.
Like many before us,
we try harder than
those who came before.
We trust the process. We
step through unopened
doors to progress.
Whether walking alone
or with someone else,
blaze trails that will
make it easier for
generations to come.
The work is never done.
It’s better to blaze trails
than to chase tails.
Look far and wide for
beaten paths. Follow
your heart, and if you
get lost, blaze a trail
like ships set sail.
If need be, try new ways
to navigate the maze.
Blaze on and reach
the top before life
stops and our vision
is gone. Without fail,
create your own trails.

The Drop Off

The
drop off is steep. You can
     slip and
             fall.
Once you are done
             falling,
             rise and pick up
             right where
you left off.
Watch for the
      drop off.
Listen for the signs.
Expect it.
      And, don't be tense.
Soon, the
drop off will be past tense.
When the
      drop off comes. Don't run.
      Your journey has just
begun.

We Will See

One day, we will see.
We will see everything
we have done unfold
in front of our eyes.
We will see life and
death walk side-by-side
our entire lives. We
will see seeds become
trees, boys become men,
men become husbands,
husbands become fathers,
fathers become grand-
fathers, nothing become
something. We will see
something become no-
thing. One day, we will
see that we should be
happy the way life is.
One day, we will see
that our life wasn’t free.
I believe we will see
everything that we need.

UPDATE

As the days have passed, I have thought more and more about my future. The more I think about my life, the more I run my thoughts into circles. I often think about the future and what is to be. When I think too far ahead, I feel bad because I know I am not living in the present. I have accepted that my future is bright, although I do not know how my career will go or how I will apply my degree. All I know is that I have to be so thankful for how much I have progressed over my entire life, particularly my college experience. As I reflect I have a greater appreciation for the trials and tribulations I have experienced. There were so many times where I have thought about giving up, but I always thought about just “finishing”. Now that I am almost “finished” with what I have wanted to achieve, I must not think about my future, but be happy that I have grown.
