Past Tense

What is done is done. We wave hello to the sun.

We never forgot about the moon. We need both

the fork and the spoon. The day may be gone,

and time may be flying, but I am still trying.

In the sky, I see birds bobbing and weaving.

I can’t take my eye off what is now leaving.

I loved, cried, and smiled in the past tense.

I live in the present where it just makes sense.

The memories stay as the past fades away.

The future is bright: I’ll be there one day.

Simon Says…

Get this bread. Fill your head.

Love endlessly. Laugh often.

Nail the coffin shut. Strut

your stuff. Call their bluff.

Say anything except “but”.

Find different ways to

fill your cup. Look up to

your friends, not your foes.

Survive the lows and enjoy

the highs. Become surprised.

Live through your own eyes.

Don’t wait until they dry.

It won’t last if you go faster.

Slow down in times of disaster.

No need to talk when you can

listen to the voices you have

been missing. Enjoy this time

as death will, one day, take

both you and me away.

New Face. Who Dis?

Leatherface beat the case.
He can wear many faces.
Tall as hell. One can tell
evil consumed him and
his heart. All his exes live
and died in Texas. You
bet he ate George Strait.
He kept his chainsaw ripping
and his cholesterol high from
eating enormous apple pies,
Kentucky Fried chicken
thighs, and human eyes.
He cares not that he is
“slow” or dumb. If you
hear the chainsaw: run.
The fun has just begun.
Leatherface can’t die.
He will beat another
case. Life is a race,
and he’s in first place.
There is no need
to worry. Leather-
face may be as dumb
as nails, yet he is as tough
as them. He can’t spell,
but he can read brail.
He does mean well.
Too bad there’s no one
left who can tell.

Carried Away

Today, I got carried away.
Instead of work, I play.
Sometimes I forget to live
without stress. The older
I get, the shorter the days.
Today, I got carried away
from what I was doing.
Half the time, I don’t know
which direction to go.
The other half of the time,
I don’t know if I should
go outside or stay in
and hide. These long legs
carry me away. One point
to the next. Feeling blessed
in my chest, I hold my head
high. I look to the sky. I see
wings carry birds away.
I feel the wind chill my skin.
I can count on my days
getting carried away.
My mind might stray, yet
my body will stay. Blue
skies littered with birds
help me find the words
needed to carry me away.
I look ahead and know that
one day, blues fade to black.

Beam Me Up, Scotty

The humans have figured me out;
they know about my earthly mission.
Scotty, bleep bloopy. Bloopy bop. Bleep.
Only you will know what that means.
Anyway, the humans will try to keep
me here. So, I need you to beam me up,
Scotty. It’s different here. People hurt
others for being different: alien. Sure,
some don’t wear disguises, but most
hide behind a face that will change.
Before most sunrises, humans dream
of being part of the winning team.
There are too many surprises. Beam
me up. I can’t live in this human
body. Send the mothership, Scotty.
