Trails

Without fail, we blaze trails
that will help others with
their paths. Like those
before us, we’re born into
life without foresight.
Like many before us,
we try harder than
those who came before.
We trust the process. We
step through unopened
doors to progress.
Whether walking alone
or with someone else,
blaze trails that will
make it easier for
generations to come.
The work is never done.
It’s better to blaze trails
than to chase tails.
Look far and wide for
beaten paths. Follow
your heart, and if you
get lost, blaze a trail
like ships set sail.
If need be, try new ways
to navigate the maze.
Blaze on and reach
the top before life
stops and our vision
is gone. Without fail,
create your own trails.

Raise the Bar

Try to face challenges
that bring your best
self out. Walk away
from the path that was
once your past. Reach
for the stars you seek.
Raise the bar and see
life from the highest
valley. Be better than
you were yesterday.
Don’t run in place.
Find strength to go
against the grain
despite the pain.
Feel peace at last.
Enjoy what you have
before it becomes
a part of your past.
It’s not too late. Raise
the bar if you can
and find a place you
would want to land.

The Other Way

I went the other way. Away from the light
of day. I went to see what it was like to
climb the tallest peak. I waved and wished
luck to those going the other way. They were
happy to go. So was I. Away, I went, on a path
that was new and scary. Light ran the other
way. I pushed on, past the darkest path.
When I arrived to the hill, I sprinted
up to the top. I didn’t stop; I stomped my foot,
yelling: “Look, I found the peak!” I was high
enough to see what we’ve been looking for.
I found our lost village. I don’t know why
I went the other way. I just knew there was
more to be seen. I went the other way
to find a forgotten place – once erased.

A New Life

Each day is a new start –
Every step will lead me
to the place, I need to be.
I see a new life ahead.
I see my life unfolding.
I picture every word
that I have ever heard.
As your life ends
another life begins.
I walk into your light
as I start a new life.

Looking Back

Looking back, I can tell you that
I wish I could do things over.
I look back and feel sad;
I think of the life I once had.
There’s a lot of pain in the past –
pain that is sure to last.
Looking back, I see what I lacked.
All I can do is look back.
I can’t change the past,
especially since time goes fast.
Looking back, I have done a lot.
I have done more than I thought.
When I walk forward, I look back.
I am sure to never backtrack
before I pave a brand new path.
