The Long Way Home

Take the long way home.
Look around as you roam.
Don’t be afraid to believe
that love will set us all free.
Take the time to view places
you once knew. Watch as
grey skies turn blue. Listen
to sounds you once heard.
It takes too long for letters
to become words. Sit. Wait
as time drives us to our fate.
Take the long way home
and take time for yourself.
The long way always helps.

Same Difference

You and I are not that different.
Our lives are just as valuable as
the next. The places we’ve been
help us understand the common
struggle in life: things we juggle.
Our experiences help us become
open-minded. They help us see
when others are stranded. We
have suffered all the same. We
understand that context matters
when we see mirrors shatter.
We feel similar pain and joy,
whether you’re a girl or boy:
a young woman or an old man.
Whether sitting or standing,
life is still a canvas that must
be painted to be viewed later.
As I say, life unfolds everyday
in miraculous ways. Together,
we can weather every storm
that comes. To be with you
and survive the storm helps
me find what I’m looking for.
Although, differences divide,
we must strive to look inside
and see what tries to hide.
We will live on all the same
unless we change the game.

These Feet

These feet keep moving on streets
that I seek until I become weak.
These bare feet move on beat
to music that my soul creates.
I make haste for time I don’t waste.
These feet are on the move like shoes
that didn’t choose to be put on.
These feet have been moving along
like they have nothing to lose.
These feet have paid their dues,
been on the news, beat cases,
and have said “no” to shoe laces.
Step by step, these feet remain
the same: adventurous and free.
These feet are still on the move
because there’s no time to lose
when there’s new places to see.

Still Here

I’m still here. Death mirrors
all life. I’m still here; fear
has left me. Time has blessed
me. Another year: I’m still here.

Through struggle, I have found
a common ground. I’m bound
to turn around every frown:
to return all stolen crowns.

Here, I am, still finding me,
doing my best to finally see
what it means to sails seas
and to grow tall with trees.

Through all the pain, I start
a journey of learning. I wish
to know all the places to go:
every single place to know.

I’m still here: I plan to live
a life that only I can give.

Windows

My eyes are windows,
and my mouth is
a door I slam shut
here and there.
My feet are floorboards.
My body is the house
that my mind powers.
I live here; I try to keep
it nice. I have my own
back. It supports me.
My arms reach out
to my neighbors.
My soul lives inside
the air that we share.
My heart hides beside
lungs that breathe
and preach peace.
My eyes are windows
to an unknown world.
Are you ready to go
to a place only I know?
