Shell Shock

The war is far from over. Each day
awakens another demon. To say
that life is a breeze must be a lie.
It is hard to stay positive when
you know, you too, will someday
die. All we can do is try to stay
sane. There is a war inside all
of our brains. There is some sun,
but mostly rain. Life can be fun
if we decide to run before father
time tucks us in. What we lose
in things is gained in wisdom.
When the dust settles, we will
see that past souls have risen.
The war is far from over, yet
the score is far from set. Bet
on yourself and don’t give up.
When feeling shell shocked, be
the rock that does not stop
staying on top. Win the battle
today. Strap on your saddle.
Ride closer to the finish line.
When the war is finally over,
our mission will be complete.
That’s when we will be okay.
That’s when we will feel peace.

The Same Shadow

I keep seeing the same
shadow. It follows me
wherever I go. I know
this shadow can grow
when lights turn low.
My fear seems to flow,
and paranoia ensues.
With every step, I look
to my right – my left,
and I feel the shadow
around me. Can it be
mine? Can it be me
from another life? Is it
the same shadow I see
in my mind? Anyway,
I walk away: leaving
shadows in my wake as
I swim across life’s lake.

Frozen Roses

It can be a cold world.
I don’t have to tell you
that. We know this.
Events, people, places
can stop us in our tracks.
It can get chilly. Life can
freeze almost all things:
just not time. Not this
time. We must carry
the warmth needed
to keep us heated.
We must survive this
snowstorm that keeps
most frozen. Pedals
from your frozen roses
remind me to find truth –
to remain warm: alive.
Your frozen roses remind
me to search and find
love I have left behind.

Stop and Go

Stop. No. Go. Stop – go – go.
Don’t stop now. Stop and go.
Go without stopping. Stop
without going. If you go,
I will stop. If I go, you will
not. Don’t go now. I can’t
stop you from going. You go
away and I can’t stop thinking
about going too. Go. Stop. Go.
Smell the rose as it’s growing.
Stop. Go. Stop and know that
you can’t stop without going.

Writing in the Rain

Rain dropped from the rooftops.
Some brought their umbrellas.
Others couldn’t see the rain coming.
People couldn’t handle being wet,
yet this is where their life was set.
For a second, everybody felt
the same way about something.
Rain touched every person there.
As others felt the rain turn to pain,
I wanted to write in the rain –
to wash away any stains.
I wrote in the rain and got soaked;
Writing in the rain helped me grow.
I felt ease with the rainy breeze.
I knew I was different; You did too.
My paper got wet; I didn’t stop.
I wanted to feel every raindrop.
I wanted to feel the rain as I knew
the rain would pass. It didn’t last.
Not before long, the rain stopped.
The sun arrived after some time.
My wet clothes dried quickly.
I looked down at my clothes;
I felt happy to see and know
the rain washed away my stains.
