Under Water

It’s been raining for 26 years straight.
I haven’t gotten tan since my life began.
Soaking wet, I had to learn to stay afloat.
I even built myself a boat. In my life,
I have seen friends, family, and strangers
encounter dangers only few understand.
I have seen some sink to the very bottom.
I never liked swimming, but it’s what I had
to do to keep living. I learned not to be
afraid to swim around before I sink down.
Some days, I’ll dive down to see buried
memories and under-water trees. The rain
never goes away as nature does its thing.
I am drenched, cold, and tired as I paddle
in place, creating ripples in time and space.
The water will rise higher, so I practice
holding my breath. I inhale first. I hope
for the best and prepare for the worst:
no air. I am under water, over my head,
but I am still alive, just extremely wet.

Down the Road

I see flowers growing
down the road. I see
them shooting through
the concrete. Under
my feet isn’t a street;
it’s a dirt road only
the roughest feet know.
I hear birds chirping
down the road. I see
the sun shoot rays
down the road. Now,
I stay in place, as I
take up space. I see
what could possibly be
in front of me. Down
the road is where I’ll go.

The Escape Artist

I slide through a window.
Dropping two stories to
the ground. I run around
trying to find a place
to escape. I am gone;
I am free from the past
and the shadow it casts.
I run down the street
with the toughest feet.
Barefoot and confused:
the moon is my muse.
I was free – a simple sign
To escape again. I escape
to find the perfect rhyme –
words that define my life.

The Road I Chose

This is my 7th Self-Published chapbook. It is called The Road I Chose. The theme is the unknown. Often times, we go through life and we are constantly presented with big decisions. The decisions we choose inevitably affect our future. I explore the feelings of being lost, being found, and being hopeful. This is the 3rd chapbook in The Driveway Journals collection, which will consist of four total chapbooks. Please enjoy this chapbook and allow it to bring peace and refuge into your life!
Peace and Love,
Jesse

I now present to you…

The Road I Chose

Around the Block

I’ve been around the block
to take walks or kick rocks.
I’ve seen the block get hot.
I’ve been there when it’s not.
My people have been around
the block and are down
to work around the clock.
This block has four sides
and I’ve seen each one.
I know everyone here. I do.
When people see me,
it isn’t anything new. It’s true.
See, I know this block well.
Each person here has a story
to tell, some about their block
and some about their cell.
I’ve been around the block
and others like me have, too.
This life is nothing new.
If I can’t be found, look around
the block: where I tend to walk.
