Down in Flames

Fight fire with fire. See
the flames kiss the sky.
Watch the sparks fly.
Feel the temperature
rise as cold weather
dies. Think back to
a time when the clouds
cried. Feel the heat
rip like a baseball
hitting a catcher’s mitt.
Poison swirls inside
a dormant mind.
Love stays on
the brain as hate
goes down the drain.
When life knocks,
do not be afraid
to open the door.
When the heat rises,
try not to go down
in flames. Save your-
self. Ask for help
before you strike
matches that will
turn all into ashes.

I’ve Been Thinking

Lately, I’ve been thinking
about pirate ships sinking.
I’ve been thinking of ways
to be spending my days.

Lately, I’ve been thinking
about those not blinking.
I’ve been thinking of you
and the stuff we used to do.

Lately, I’ve been thinking
about my future and what
it holds. I’ve been thinking
of what I have done right
or wrong. I’ve been thinking
of ways to become better.

Lately, I’ve been thinking
of how things used to be.
I’ve been thinking about life
and how days became nights.

Now, I’m thinking that it will
be fine. I’ve been thinking
that I must take the time
to feel alright and to be kind.

The Great Escape

You don’t have to do much
to get tripped up. The mind
contains chains that hold
down brains. The mind
can wander down on trails
derailing trains of thought.
The mind is a cage holding
in memories once caught.
Inside your mind, find time
to escape the cage keeping
you from chasing dreams.
When the walls start closing
in, breathe in the care-free
air. Close your eyes and look
inside. Free yourself – believe
there is more to every life.
Break free from yourself.
Run! Flee! Find happiness:
a life full of freedom and bliss.

The Bucket

Today is just a drop in the bucket.
How full must the bucket get for me
to tip it over or to karate kick it?
There’s no telling the amount of rain
that will come. The drops will fill
buckets – faster than eyes blink –
but slower than brains think –
definitely faster than ships sink.
Today is just a drop in the bucket:
a drop sending ripples through
untouched waters I once knew.
Buckets hold life; we hold buckets.
That is something I cannot forget.

How to; Write a Poem

Sit down. Close
Your eyes. Feel
Emotions wash
Over your soul.
Sit for a while.
Run a mile
In your mind.
Return to
Your body. Pick
Up your pen.
Then, lay down
Your journal.
Look internally,
Eternally. Let
Words flow
On the page.
Break free
From the cage
Causing you
Rage. Release
The pain inside
And find
That silver line
In each rhyme.
Rid yourself
Of the stress –
Put to rest
The weight
You carry
In your chest.
Write with no
End in sight.
Wrong or right,
Live a life
Worth writing
About before
Your pen’s ink
Runs out.
