I have a question….

With me being on this website, I am able to see and read a lot of amazing poems. Throughout my exploration, I always wonder why people write or what exactly compels people to write. It may seem like a basic thought and even simpler question, but it is one that crosses my brain often. With that being said:

Why do you write?

I would love to hear your answers in the comments.

I know you didn’t ask, but for me, writing allows me to relax and really slow down time. I may not always have the motivation or inspiration to write, but whenever I do start, I am able to shut out the world, and my problems seem to be put on pause during that time. I also enjoy the search for conveying a message through the exploration of synonyms, ways to word things, and expanding my vocabulary. There is nothing better than finding and incorporating the perfect/exact word in a phrase or sentence. I write for selfish reasons, but I also do it to share my story and hopefully connect with others, so they can hopefully relate to my vulnerability and willingness to share.

Now, let’s hear why you write.

Because it speaks of things everyday words cannot express. Because it reaches within and beyond, to ideas and feelings that would, otherwise, remain buried.

Were I in my more esoteric mood, I might say it gives substance and form to the hidden self. A cry from the wild, untamed paet of me.

Because there is catharsis, joy, tears, and understanding for those who take the time properly to read, listen, feel.

Sometimes, I wonder should I stop. And, sometimes I slow down. But so far, something has always put the pen back in my hand.

The summary of all this? I don’t, really, know…

That is very well said. I think there is something within all of us that needs to break out, and not knowing why while also trying to provide an explanation sums it up perfectly. It is an itch that needs to be scratched. Thank you for sharing!!!!

Like you said, I enter that flow state where I’m totally engrossed in creating … in finding the perfect explanation or description or sound, and time just flies by.

There was a time when I only wrote about sad things, and like Simon I was tempted to stop because of that. Sometimes it’s a rant to expel pain, which feels like it needs to be done. That process seems to help me heal. At times writing is the only thing I can do … I feel compelled to it.

I love to play with words and sounds, and to meet words I don’t know yet — and the challenge of attempting to fit words to a new technique. I even love the physical sensation and the sounds from my keys tapping along on the keyboard, and the feel of holding a pen and the slide of the ink, and the pleasing visual effects of writing on a page or on screen. Getting the layout, punctuation and capitalisation of a poem just right!

It’s satisfying to finish polishing I’m happy with it.

Sometimes I write because I want to let people know about an injustice that I feel particularly strongly about. I want to communicate, to raise awareness of issues, or to connect people who care about the same things. I want to stir people to act to fix something.

I like reading my work out loud, and I like it when people read my work and say things about it, so there’s probably an aspect of liking the attention writing can bring, or the interactions it can give rise to.

I like coming back to read things I’ve written previously — and being surprised when they’re better than I thought!
