A luminous light drew me
in. It illuminated a path
I yearned to take. Without its
guidance, I would be lost.
The tunnel’s suffocating silence
only made the voices in my head
that much louder. I have almost
become numb to the pain.
Despite my diminishing senses,
I could still feel raging rivers
of blood relentlessly course
through my veins and keep
my broken heart beating.
I could feel my lungs fill up
with the last breath you took:
the air that gave you life.
I could feel my eyes well up
thinking about all the tears
you have shed and the weight
you were forced to carry.
I’ll never understand why
I stepped into the all-devouring
darkness where shapeless
manifestations of malevolent
monsters lurk in the deep
depths of my subconscious.
Before I started my journey,
I couldn’t avoid the unfamiliar
voice that hypnotized me
and altered my thinking.
The voice of reason I’ve come
to trust was as good as gone.
Leaving all I have known
did not take much convincing.
Achieving the feeling of reaching
the end of the tunnel –
making it to the other side –
seemed so appealing. Curiosity
got the best of me. I have learned
that enlightenment only
happens with great sacrifice.
In the beginning, walking into
the void seemed impossible,
but it was the fear of regret
that pushed me forward.
I would like to think that
I never had a choice. Regardless
of how hard I tried to stay,
I was destined to go toward
the light that has blinded
so many. There is something
magical about the unknown.
As I face the darkness, the light
at the end of the tunnel
reassures me that, with every
step, I will be that much closer
to a better tomorrow. The sorrow
of tonight will soon fade away.
I will move past the pain;
yesterday’s struggles will
become forgotten memories.
As long as I follow the light,
the future will always be bright.
